What's in a My Pie?
We use pure New Zealand butter in our traditional handmade pastry (shortcrust base and puff pastry lid). Sunflower oil is used in our dairy-free pastry, no margarines full of trans fats and other nasties. Our fillings are made with carefully sourced meats and vegetables cooked in their own juices - no commercially made stocks are added. We thicken (when required) with either wheat flour or maize cornflour rather than commercial powdered pie seasonings and thickenings. And we season them with ground pepper and sea salt, free from the added aluminium known as "anti-caking agent". We prefer to use our aluminium for window frames.
What is being said about My Pie?
According to Grant Smithies (Escape section Sunday Star Times 3/1/10) My Pie produces the best meat pies in the nation, perhaps the world.
Are My Pies better for me than most other pies?
We haven't done any official nutritional analysis on My Pies yet, so we can't make any claims here. But we do believe that eating foods made from natural ingredients is much better for you. My Pie ingredients are as natural as possible.
Will My Pies make me fat?
That’s entirely up to you! We all know jolly well that if you eat too much of just about anything and avoid exercise, there's only one result. It’s all about balance and we recommend you balance your diet with loads of fresh fruit and vegetables and regular exercise. The exercise part is up to you.
Who built the fabulous My Pie cart?
It's a secret! Hand built to our specification - we're not telling! But we will tell you that the brilliant new look is thanks to Karpaintz and Mapua Signs.
Why do My Pies cost more than other pies?
Every My Pie is hand finished. We make our own pastry from natural ingredients, shortcrust for the bottoms and puff pastry for the tops. And we refuse to lengthen My Pie fillings with buckets of water and artificial seasonings. That means our fillings take longer to cook and our handmade pastry needs extra careful handling, but the results are utterly delicious. We think it's worth the extra effort.
How do I heat My Pies?
From chilled: 25 minutes at 180oC, or if you are short of time microwave 3 minutes and finish in oven 5 minutes at 200oC.
From frozen: 30 minutes at 180oC, or if you are short of time microwave 4 minutes and finish in oven 4 minutes at 200oC.
Microwave only: Heating solely by microwave is not recommended. Frankly, microwaved pastry is the devil's work.
Where can I buy My Pies?
From our kitchen in Nelson, or from one of several eateries with utterly delicious menus. If you haven't seen My Pies near you, start asking for them by name! If you want to sell My Pies through your business, please contact us to ask for details.
Who's got a finger in My Pie?
Hopefully no one. But seriously, you shouldn't find anything unexpected in My Pies as our kitchen follows a very strict hygiene programme. However, if you do have a problem with our product please contact us immediately. Give us the chance to do whatever we possibly can to put it right.
Are My Pies organic?
No. We believe in using the best tasting ingredients for My Pies, whether or not they are organic. We source ingredients based on consistency of quality, taste and supply at a price that keeps the cost to you reasonable. For instance, we use Canterbury lamb in our Minted Lamb & Pea pie. It's not organic but it is world renowned for its flavour and tenderness. We use Whitestone Cheese's award winning Windsor Blue cheese in our Windsor Blue pie. We reckon it's the best tasting blue cheese you'll find. The Founders Beef pie does have the Founders Brewery organic long black ale in it!
Who ate all the My Pies?
The traditional answer to this contains a sweary word. So we can’t tell you here. But we can tell you that lots of folk from around the world have eaten and fallen in love with My Pies.
Are any My Pies gluten free?
Yes!!!! as of October 2009 we have a gluten free pastry that we are happy to attach the My Pie name to! Currently only available from the pie cart or the My Pie kitchen in 3 flavours and 2 sizes. Individual and family size pies with either Thai Coconut Chicken, Moroccan Vegetarian Tagine or Beef and vegetable filling. The gluten free pastry is rice flour based - we use eggs and butter in the pastry. Now everyone can indulge in My Pie!
Are My Pies vegetarian?
Yes, there are now 3 vegetarian My Pies. Windsor Blue & Kumara, Thai Satay Vegetables and Moroccan Vege Tagine. You might be surprised to learn that most pastry margarine contains beef tallow. We use our own traditional butter pastry for the Windsor Blue (Windsor blue cheese and cream cheese are also vegetarian) and the Thai Satay Vegetable pie, so it’s vegetarian. The Moroccan Tagine pie is also dairy free wrapped in a deliciously nutty pastry made with wholemeal flour and sunflower oil.
Why is My Pie pastry so darn good?
A few vital but not-so-secret ingredients; pure New Zealand butter, time, good judgement and careful handling. Butter gives our traditional shortcrust and puff pastries a scrumptiously light, melt in the mouth texture that knocks commercially produced margarine pastries into a cocked hat. Our puff pastry is folded and rolled again and again to give those lovely flaky layers, then well rested before going into the pie trays. Our dairy free pastry is made with sunflower oil, giving it a lovely nutty taste. All three pastries are vegetarian.
